Chris Rock hosted the 88th Academy Awards on Sunday and managed to address the weighty issues of #OscarsSoWhite and #BlackLivesMatter with a lot of humor.
After walking out to the Public Enemy song “Fight The Power,” Rock joked that he counted at least 15 black people in the opening montage.
He then came quick with the jabs saying, “If they nominated hosts, I wouldn’t even get this job. You’d be watching Neil Patrick Harris right now.”
Rock called out Hollywood’s lack of diversity by saying “You damn right Hollywood is racist” and even said Hollywood is “sorority racist” (you know, that polite racism that says, we like you, BUT you’re just not LIKE us).
But the kicker was when Rock reminded everyone that the Oscars has been SoWhite for many decades but “Black people did not protest because we had real things to protest at the time. We were too busy being raped and lynched to worry about best cinematography.”
And referring to recent police shootings and the #BlackLivesMatter movement the comedian said, “In the In Memoriam package, it’s just going to be black people shot by the cops on the way to the movies.”
Well played Chris Rock! We’re glad you didn’t #BoycottTheOscars2016
